June Bernice Carter, 91, a lifelong Brookston resident, passed away at 2:40 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2018 at University Place Health Center of West Lafayette.

She was born July 4, 1926 to the late Russell and Edna (Chilton) Morehouse of Brookston. June was a 1944 graduate of Brookston High School and a graduate of the Indiana School of Business in Lafayette.

Her marriage of 64 years was to Thomas E. Carter on June 13, 1948 at Badger Grove Community Baptist Church; he preceded her in death on August 27, 2012.

Mrs. Carter was a lifelong member of the Badger Grove Church where she served in many church activities. She shared her music gift as pianist and organist 70 years for Sunday worship, choir, VBS, and accompanied various groups (especially the 3 D’s) and individuals. June was an active member of Badger Grove’s Missionary Society where she served in various offices. She and Tom enjoyed many years as youth sponsors. She was always ready to lend a hand in church events, farm sales, bridal showers, steak suppers, holiday programs and area women’s fellowship, usually with pecan pies ready.

Music was an important part of her life of faith. She credited God for her talent and joyfully shared it. June encouraged music in the family and inspired jam sessions, piano and organ duets and budding musicians. She continued the family legacy of community service and music playing funerals for nearly 40 years for her friends in the Brookston community.

June’s loving heart blessed friends and family with a smile, a song, a hug, a small squeeze of her hand, meals and hospital visits; lifting each up in prayer. Her positive, selfless life, grounded in Biblical principles and values, touched many lives and she will be dearly missed.

She cherished her family and the times they laughed, played and shared delicious meals together. June served each one, making sure that there was fun and food.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Carter and one brother, Donald E. Morehouse.

June is survived by three children; Dan Carter (wife: Glenda) of Franklin, IN, Denny Carter (wife: Carol) of Brookston and Darlene (Carter) Colliver (husband: Charles) of Lynchburg, Ohio; a sister, Joy (Morehouse) Carlson of Warsaw, 7 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home (101 West 4th Street Brookston). Funeral service 10 a.m. Friday, January 12, 2018 at Badger Grove Community Baptist Church (11539 South 500 West Brookston); Pastor Roger Strunk to officiate. Interment to follow in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens Cemetery, West Lafayette.
