Guy W. Shine, 94, of West Lafayette, passed away at 4:30 p.m. in his home, Tuesday, February 14, 2017.

He was born May 30, 1922 in Wolcott, Indiana to the late Arch M. and Blanche (Baylor) Shine, farmers in the Chalmers/Brookston area. He was a 1941 graduate of Brookston High School.

Like many of the greatest generation, Guy entered World War II after high school joining the Army Air Corp. entering the Aviation Cadet Pilot training program. He became a B-17 and B-29 Pilot, serving with the 330th bomb group, stationed in Guam. Mr. Shine flew 26 combat missions against Japan. He was awarded the distinguished Flying Cross not once but twice. Guy was selected to participate as pilot aboard one of four B-29’s flying non-stop from Japan to Washington D.C. in October of 1945 following the war. He remained in the Air Force Reserves, retiring in 1969 as a Lt. Colonel in Air Force Intelligence.

On April 10, 1943 he married Eva Belle Bear in Starkville, Mississippi and the couple was married nearly 30 years; later divorcing. Guy then married Mila Downing on March 2, 1974 in Battle Ground; she preceded him in death on March 30, 2010.

He was a long standing member of the Battle Ground United Methodist Church and was also a member of the American Legion Post #11 of Lafayette.

As a civilian, Mr. Shine worked for the Meridian Mutual Insurance group as a Senior Claims Adjuster from 1955 through 1984 when he retired.

Guy spent his retirement restoring his 1957 Piper, Tri pacer, single engine airplane and flying it well into his 70’s. He loved traveling, playing golf, fishing, hunting, wood working and in the spring, perusing the Morel mushroom. He was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs and enjoyed their World Series win very much.

Surviving are his children, Paul D. Shine (wife: Cathy) of Garland, TX, Carl E. Shine (Companion: Lisa Sandoe) of West Lafayette and Norma K. Brewster (husband: Larry) of Superior, CO; and a step-son, Dan Downing (wife: Jill) of Carmel, IN. Guy loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, Laura, Brad, Damon (wife: Lauren), Aaron (wife: Jacklyn), Bryan (wife: Molly), Lawrence (wife: Allie), Libby, Clay (wife: Sarah), Katie (husband: Matt), Stacy (husband: J.J.) and Dana. Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Davis, Tristan, Mila, Aubrey, Hannah and Levi and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death with his parents and second wife are his siblings, Avis Deweese, Wilma Shine, Ralph Shine and Howard Shine and a step-son, Gary Downing.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Monday, February 20, 2017 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston. Funeral service 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2017 also at the funeral home; Rev. Dr. Lelan D. McReynolds to officiate. Interment with full military rites to follow in Battle Ground Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials are requested to the Battle Ground United Methodist Church.
