Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home - Brookston
Ruth L. Carter( October 25, 1929 - June 22, 2014 )
Ruth L. (O'Connell) Carter, 84, of Brookston went to be with the Lord at 11:20 am, Sunday, June 22, 2014 at Cumberland Pointe, West Lafayette. She was born on October 25, 1929 to the late Harry and Faye (Doud) O'Connell. She was a 1947 graduate of Brookston High School. On April 10, 1949 Ruth married her high school sweetheart, Charles F. Carter and they were married for 60 years before Charles preceded her in death in June 2009. Ruth and Charles lived their entire life in the rural Brookston area until a stroke necessitated Ruth's move to Cumberland Pointe Health Campus in West Lafayette in March 2011. Ruth was a full-time mother who loved to sew and make clothing for her family. She also enjoyed cooking, baking, and arts and crafts. She helped Charles with the family business, Carter Manufacturing, in its beginning years. In the early 1970's Ruth taught herself to quilt and became a prolific quilter making over 30 hand-made quilts. Ruth was an active member of the Brookston Church of Christ her entire adult life. At retirement, Ruth and Charles joined the Church of Christ Sojourner's group. They worked with the group for 17 years, supporting their own travels in an RV from Alaska to Key West in order to help churches and church camps. They developed friendships with fellow Sojourner's that lasted until Ruth's death. She frequently would say that the Sojourner years were the best years of her life. Ruth is survived by 2 daughters, Colleen Batt (husband: AJ) and Marsha Moore (husband: James) both of Brookston; 5 grandchildren, Ashley Batt-Reece (husband: Antonio) of Cutler Bay, FL, David Batt (wife: Nikki) of Delphi, Micah Moore of Brookston, Jonathan Batt of Brookston, and Mark Moore (wife: April) of Lafayette; a great-grandchild, Owen Batt; and 2 step great-grandchildren, Sydney and Kailinn Ross. Ruth's family would like to thank the residents, caregivers, and entire staff of Cumberland Pointe for their exceptional, loving care that was extended to Ruth, and her family during her entire stay. Friends may call from 1:00 pm until time of service at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home with Minister Chris Mathias officiating. Interment will follow at Brookston I.O.O.F Cemetery, Brookston. Memorial donations may be given in Ruth's name to the Sojourners and may be mailed Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home, P.O. Box 509, Brookston, IN 47923. Share memories and online condolences at www.clapperfuneralservices.com.
