Elmer D. "Sonny" Barrett Jr., 59, of Chalmers, died at 3:46 p.m., Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born on June 1, 1954 in Lafayette to the late Elmer D. Barrett Sr. and Ethel Mae (Oliver) Barrett and graduated from Frontier High School in 1972. His marriage was to Linda Miller on March 19, 1977 at her parents' home in Tippecanoe County. Sonny farmed his whole life and owned his own trucking company for over 20 years. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends, and loved raising the best sweet corn around. Everyone who met Sonny loved him. His neighbors held a benefit for him on December 14th in Reynolds, and despite the cold weather, the place was packed. Sonny's family is grateful to live in such a generous community. Surviving with his wife of 36 years are his two children, Brooke Barrett of Reynolds and Evan Barrett of Chalmers. He is also survived by his grandson, Eli Dwight Barrett, and 3 nephews. Preceding him in death with his parents is a sister, Mary Jane Swisshelm. Funeral Service there at 10 am, Monday, February 17, 2014 with Pastor Bill Henderson officiating. Private family interment to follow in West Point Cemetery, Seafield. Memorials may be made in his name to the St. Jude Children's Hospital .
