Mary E. Schmidt, 92, of Lafayette, died at 9:10 a.m. Friday, April 1, 2011 at Mulberry Health & Retirement Community in Mulberry. She was born March 1, 1919 in Martinsville, Indiana to the late James and Mary Scott. Her marriage was to Bob Schmidt, and he preceded her in death. Prior to moving to Lafayette, Mary lived in Bluewater Bay, Florida for thirty years. She was active in Twin Cities Women's Club, Bridge Club, Welcome Wagon, Caring and Sharing, and mentoring at Niceville Elementary School. She was a member of Christ The Redeeemer Church of Bluewater Bay. Surviving is a daughter, Rebecca Kennedy (husband: Joseph) of Lafayette; a step-son, John Schmidt (wife: Michele) of Crested Butte, CO; and a step-son-in-law, Sam Gray of Indianapolis. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, Jay Kennedy of Denver, CO; Brian Kennedy (wife: Danya) of Hoboken, NJ; Lisa Poat (husband: Raymond) of Kokomo; Meg Brethauer (husband: Jeff) of Crested Butte, CO; Grant Gray (wife: Erin) of Lebanon; John Schmidt of Chicago, IL; Michael Schmidt of Indianapolis; and Katie Whitehead (husband: Thomas) of Crested Butte, CO; and six great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a step-daughter, Carol Gray. Private family services will be held at a later date. Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston in charge of arrangements.
