Ruth "Irene" Speer, 66, of Delphi, died at 5:10 a.m. Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at the home she shared with her son and daughter-in-law. It was her third bout of cancer and she had been fighting it since 2008. She was born September 30, 1944 in Brookston to the late Earl E. and Ruth A. (Overman) Perry. She attended Battle Ground Schools. Her marriage was to Randall H. Speer on August 26, 1961 in Brookston; he survives. She had lived in Delphi since 1981. Mrs. Speer worked at Fast Max in Delphi for 10 years and for the Journal & Courier as a custodian for several years before that. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and loved sitting in the outdoors swing listening to the birds. Surviving is a son, Ricky L. Speer (wife: Dolly) of Delphi and a brother, Bill Perry (wife: Pat) of North Carolina. Irene loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, Theresa Butler (husband: Curtis) and Melissa, Steven and Casey Speer and her 6 great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Friday, February 18, 2011 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home in Brookston. Interment to follow in Brookston IOOF Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Irene Speer Memorial Fund.
