Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home - Brookston

Carolyn Jean Robinson

( November 3, 1931 - November 16, 2018 )

Carolyn Jean Probasco Robinson, 87, of Brookston, Indiana passed away Friday November 16, 2018 at University Place in West Lafayette. She was born November 3, 1931 in Lafayette, Indiana to her parents, the late John Sherman and Carrie Meharry Probasco.

She grew up on a farm in southern Tippecanoe County, near the foothills of the great Shawnee Mound, just south of West Point, Indiana. She was a 1949 graduate of Jackson Heights High School and graduate from Purdue University in 1953, earning her degree in Home Economics.

After graduation, Carolyn taught Home Economics and PE at Monticello High School in Monticello, Indiana. She was a beloved teacher and kept in touch with many of her students over the years.

It was at an Indiana Rural Youth social event where she met the love of her life, Kean E. Robinson. They married in June 9, 1957 at the Jackson Heights Methodist Church.

Carolyn was a prominent Brookston community leader for nearly 60 years. She was a great 4-H leader for the Prairie Township girls club. She taught many young ladies the beauty of an even hem, and the makings of a blue ribbon cookie. She was a member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority, the Prairiette Home Extension Club, the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and a Sunday school teacher at Brookston United Methodist Church.

Carolyn was a loving and devoted mother to her four children serving as taxi driver to football practice, basketball practice, Scouts, swimming lessons, band practice, play practice, dance recitals and 4-H club meetings.

She was a great cook and loved to bake. When the men were farming in the fields, her Buick station wagon bouncing along the bean stubble was always a welcome sight at supper time.

She was an avid seamstress, made many clothes for the family and curtains for the house. Was able to save a prom dress with a matching ruffle, whip together last-minute bridesmaid dresses, costumes for the school play, and miraculously repair that favorite pair of old worn-out jeans.

Carolyn was an integral part of Two Cookin’ Sisters Specialty Food Company & Shop in beautiful downtown Brookston. Being Mom to the two sisters, she opened the kitchen every day, firing up the jam pots, cutting sweet dill pickles and creating new delicious recipes that would be the “next big seller.”

Carolyn loved and supported her Purdue Boilermakers. She and Kean were season ticket holders of both football and basketball for nearly 40 years, traveling to many bowl games and tournaments. Carolyn and Kean were also avid bridge players, participating in local tournaments and get-togethers with good friends.

She is preceded in death by her brother William Robert Probasco of West Point and her twin sister Davida who passed at the age of four.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years Kean, her four children Kristi (Bill) Rensberger of Chesterton, IN, Mike (Kelli) Robinson of Osceola, IN, Kim (Mark Sterne) Robinson of Brookston and Marc (Alice) Robinson of Albion, IN.

Seven grand-children Mitchell, Jenna, Jonathan, Billy, Zackary, Alyson and Nathan. Three great-grand-children Libby, Wilson and Calvin who all lovingly called her their Granny.

We are so ever grateful to the wonderful staff at University Place and Via Quest Hospice Care of West Lafayette for all the care and comfort that they provided Mom, and to our family in these past few weeks. Also, the staff of Comfort Keepers for their help with Mom at home. Thank you very much.

Family and friends can celebrate Mom on Saturday November 24, 2018 from 11-2pm at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home in Brookston. A special memorial service from members of Psi Iota Xi Sorority will be at 2pm with the funeral service to follow; Rev. Dr. Lelan D. McReynolds to officiate. Interment to follow in Brookston IOOF Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the White Co. 4-H Fairgrounds or the Brookston Chapter Psi Iota Xi Sorority.
