Biographical Information:
She was born on March 16, 1922, on the family farm in Clinton County, Indiana, in a home built by her Great-Grandfather Hiram B. Crouse. She attended school in Rossville, Indiana before the family moved to Monticello in 1939. She graduated from Roosevelt High School with its second graduating class in 1941. In 1942, she married Joseph A. Miller from Brazil, Indiana, a Sergeant in the U.S. Army. Following the war, they settled in Monticello.
During the years as a Monticello resident, she was involved in many community and church activities. She served as President of Chapter Gamma Eta, Tri Kappa, PTA president, president of Presbyterian Women and director of the Junior Choir at First Presbyterian Church where she became a member in 1939. She was an active member of the White County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered at the Monticello Public Library. While raising four children, she was the office manager of her husband’s company, Miller Plumbing and Heating (later Miller Mechanical). After her husband passed away, she wintered in Winter Haven, Florida for many years where she was active in the Hope Presbyterian Church choir, the public library and the hospital auxiliary.
She was a wonderful role model for family and friends as a devoted believer and follower of Jesus. Her many personal journals are a treasure and a testimony to her walk and faith in God. Even at her advanced age, she read her Bible aloud to share with others and occasionally played hymns on her piano. In earlier years, she enjoyed sewing, needlework, painting, playing the organ and cooking for her family. She made the best lemon meringue and pecan pies in the world! She loved infants and young children and was delighted when her caregivers would bring their children to visit her.
