Biographical Information:
Mary and her twin brother entered this world from parents immigrated from Sweden and married in the United States to raise their family farming in Iowa. As a young girl she grew up during the depression on the family farm, and attended a one room school house located on the family farm. The school teacher boarded with family during the school year. She attended high school in Red Oak, Iowa, boarding with town people during the week and going home on the weekends. After high school she moved to Chicago, Illinois, with her two cousins and ended up working as a secretary for the Atomic Energy Commission, located in the basement of the Museum of Science of Industry in Chicago, Illinois, where the Coal Mine was eventually located. She married her future husband of 50 years in Chicago, Illinois, and together they raised their three children in Lansing, Illinois. After her three kids were all in school she went to work as a teller at the First National Bank of Lansing, eventually working her way up to head bookkeeper. She took a lot of pride in making sure the bank balanced to the penny each and every day. She treated her checkbook the same way, and even after she turned 90, she would spend hours making sure it balanced to the penny every month. In 1972, Bob and Mary bought a grocery store on Monon Road near Lowes Bridge in rural Monticello, Indiana, which eventually became known as "Turbin’s Corner". A laundry mat was later added to the building, which continued in operation long after the grocery store closed. She loved doing things with her husband and family, boating on Lake Shaffer, working on her yard, and garden. She was a member of the Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, Alter and Rosary Society of the church, a Life - Time member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Amvets Post #91, and was a Life - Time member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Post #2231, all of Monticello, Indiana.
