George Lewis Lumley

( December 3, 1943 - August 27, 2022 )

George Lewis Lumley, 78, of Lafayette, passed away at home at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2022 surrounded by his family.

George was born December 3, 1943 in Lafayette to the late Earl and Mildred (Honn) Lumley and was a 1963 graduate of Battle Ground High School.

His marriage of 35 years was to Nancy J. Stark on August 25, 1968 in Lafayette; she preceded him in death on March 24, 2002.  George later married Peggy J. Brunton on June 19, 2004 in Lafayette; she survives.

Mr. Lumley worked at Eli Lilly for 27 years as a Carpenter Millwright until his retirement in 2000, but his true occupation was that of a farmer.  George loved antique tractors and showed them at the Tippecanoe County Stream and Power Show and several local fairs.  He enjoyed square dancing and playing Uno, Checkers and Yahtzee.

George enjoyed attending New Hope Fellowship Church in Lafayette.  He was a proud member of the Gideons and loved to spread the word of Jesus while distributing bibles to hospitals, hotels and jails.

George was also a member of the Rural Youth, Indiana Farm Bureau, F&AM Lodge #492, Dayton Optimist Club, and the Eli Lilly Camping Club.  Some of the best memories are spending time around the campfire with him and his plentiful gardens.  George enjoyed spending time with family and traveled between Indiana and Ohio to attend family functions. He understood the ministry of presence and never missed a wedding, funeral, or special event; as his nieces and nephews will testify.  He seldom left home without his security toothpick and a pocket full of candy for the kids.  He will be deeply missed.

Surviving with his wife Peggy, are his children; Gordon Lumley (wife: Shawnda) and Kimberly Switzer (husband: Andy) both of Lafayette; three brothers, Howard Lumley (wife: Darlene), Arnold Lumley (wife: Marilyn) and Cecil Lumley (wife: Ruth); and a sister, Mary Bays (husband: Jim).  George loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, Layne Reichart (husband: Cody) and Harley Lumley (fiancé: Michael Cox), Colby Lumley and Jonah, Isaac, Vivian, Elijah, Sarah, Sam and Tobias Switzer.  Also surviving are two great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Mason Reichart and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death with his parents and first wife, Nancy, is a sister, Lucile Mouzon and her husband Bill.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2022 and also from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 1, 2022 at Heartland Community Church (3900 East 300 North Lafayette, IN  47905); Pastor David Harris of New Hope Church to officiate.  Interment to follow in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery of Lafayette.

Memorials may be made to New Hope Fellowship Church or the Gideons International.
