Foster-Clapper Funeral Home - Wolcott

Gloria Jean Humphreys

( February 8, 1940 - August 2, 2023 )

Gloria Jean (Hurliman) Humphreys, 83, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2023 at Traditions at Reagan Park in Avon, Indiana.  Gloria had been a resident of Wolcott, Indiana for over 50 years.
Gloria was born at home near Stockland, Illinois on February 8, 1940 to Chris and Lena Hurliman. She went to a one room school house until 4th grade and grew up on a farm in Iroquois County Illinois with siblings Russell, Margaret and Wayne. She graduated in 1961 from Illinois State University and became an elementary school teacher. She met her soulmate Jim on a blind date and was married on June 9, 1963 in Watseka, Illinois. Gloria embraced the role of farmers wife and supported Jim and the girls in all of their activities. She had the spirit and kindness of a caregiver and the heart of a servant whether it be for her family, church, friends or neighbors.  She was comforted by doing for others whether that be baking a special treat, cleaning house for a sick neighbor, or providing support to a friend over coffee and piece of pie.
Gloria enjoyed walking in several Indianapolis Mini Marathons, completing her last one at age 70. She was a very talented painter and ceramic artist and gifted many of her creations to friends and family.  Gloria loved supporting her kids and family at the White County 4-H Fair. She enjoyed visiting special neighbors the Ponto’s and Hall’s as well as a special cousin-in-law Larry Klink and her Meadow Lake Church family.   Annually for the past 25 years the “Hurliman 4” get together was a special time for Gloria, her siblings and special cousin to gather for a long weekend of food, fellowship and fun. She enjoyed her final Hurliman 4 in June 2023 where she served as hostess.
Raised a Lutheran, Gloria attended the Meadow Lake Presbyterian Church serving on the Missionary Board and as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She participated in the Wolcott Soup Kitchen, the Wolcott 4th of July Festival Fireworks campaign and Fountain Park Chautauqua Art Colony.
Gloria is survived by daughters Sara (Bill) Murphy of Avon; Rebecca Klueppel of Eddyville, KY; grandchildren Courtney, Rachael, Jake and Sam Klueppel; siblings Russell Hurliman, Margaret Willis, and Wayne (Sue) Hurliman.  Gloria was preceded in death by her husband Jim and her parents Chris and Lena Hurliman.
The family is asking for an informal visitation from 11 AM - 1 PM (EST) Saturday, August 5, 2023 at Meadow Lake Presbyterian Church in Wolcott, with sharing of Gloria stories by friends and family during the funeral service beginning at 1 PM.  Fellowship to follow mom’s interment in the Meadow Lake Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the girls are asking that contributions may be made in Gloria’s name to Meadow Lake Cemetery or the White County Ag Association with the memo re: Andrew Humphreys Beef Pavilion.
