Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home - Brookston

Linda J Newberry

( October 16, 1939 - September 16, 2023 )

Linda J. (King) Newberry, 83, of Brookston, passed away at 8:20 a.m. Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Glasswater Creek of Lafayette.

Linda was born October 16, 1939 in Hardinsburg, Kentucky and was a graduate of Hardinsburg High School.

Her marriage of 44 years was to Albert W. “Wally” Newberry on June 27, 1959 in Lafayette.  Wally preceded her in death on July 18, 2003.

Linda was a stay-at-home mom, taking care of Steven and Tracy until they were old enough to attend school.  When the kids reached school age, Linda started working at Florella Flowers in Brookston, a career that would last over 30 years until its closing.  She enjoyed painting and her artistic nature showed in her work at the flower shop.  Since yellow was her favorite color, she often wore it and gave gifts of yellow to others; she thought it brightened up every room in the house.

Linda was a wonderful wife, mom, and homemaker.  She took great pride in keeping their house and flower gardens in nice condition.  Linda was extremely proud of her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She was a wonderful cook, often making her scalloped chicken, angel biscuits, and yellow-iced sugar cookies.  She even published her own cookbook!  Many a neighbor appreciated the unsolicited pie deliveries.  Linda would often cook meals for families in need or for funerals.  She enjoyed passing on her love for cooking to others, especially to the younger generation; she truly was the consummate grandma.  Linda was an avid reader; you would never find her without a book.  When Linda’s grandchildren were grown, she adopted the Clapper girls as her own and would often be seen first in line at the elementary reading a book waiting on them; it was a special relationship, especially with Payton.

Surviving with her daughter, Tracy Peters, are her grandchildren, Josh Newberry (Kelsie), Shelby Dunscomb (Mike), Spencer Peters (Olivia) and Abby Neely (Spencer); her daughter-in-law, Jennifer Newberry; and her best friend and sister, Brenda King.  Linda was so proud of her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren, Karoline, Kennedy, Eden and Quinn.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Wally; her son, Steven; and her son-in-law, Fred.  We are sure she is up in heaven getting them straightened out right now.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 1 p.m. Friday, September 22, 2023 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston; Rev. Dr. Lelan D. McReynolds to officiate.  Interment to follow in the Brookston Cemetery.
