James Matthew Walker( September 3, 1936 - March 24, 2025 ) James Matthew Walker, 88, of Monticello, passed away at 7:25 p.m., Monday, March 24, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family. Jim was born on September 3, 1936, in East Chicago, Indiana to the late James G. and Marguerite M. (Tully) Walker. He was a 1955 graduate of George Rogers Clark High School in Hammond, Indiana. After high school, Jim served as a radio operator in the United States Marine Corp from Sept. 14, 1955, until his honorable discharge on September 11, 1959. His marriage of 48 years was to Barbara A. Hopper on November 9, 1976, in First Presbyterian Church of Highland, Indiana. Jim was an electrician for LTV Steel in East Chicago for 34 years until he retired in 1998. After retirement, Jim and Barb moved to Monticello to be close to his family that owned Walkers Resort. Jim learned his love of fishing from early trips with his father. Later in life, he passed down that love to his grandchildren who would come stay and compete in fishing tournaments on Lake Shafer; winning many of those tournaments was a highlight for the entire family. He enjoyed fish fries with family and friends, especially the neighbors. Jim also enjoyed making homemade wine with family, particularly his “Catfish Red” that was in high demand. He was an avid reader, especially of Steven King novels. His favorite movie of all time was Zulu, staring Michael Caine. Jim loved spending time with his family. He had a terrific sense of humor, often teasing his wife Barb whenever he got the chance, especially about her “Moes” chili. He truly was a terrific man. Surviving with his wife, Barb, are their children, Jennifer Jacobson (Brian), Byron Peterson (Pamela), Heather Peterson (Julie), James Walker (Valerie), Chris Walker (Suzi), Shelley Walker and Dan Walker (Karen); and one sister, Susan Moskal. Jim had many wonderful grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death with his parents is a brother-in-law, Dick Moskal. Per Jim’s wishes, no funeral services are being planned. Memorials may be made in his name to Fishing Has No Boundaries, an organization dedicated to sharing the great outdoors with children with disabilities.
