Richard J. McKinney, 80, of Reynolds, passed away surrounded by his family on the morning of Monday, August 11, 2025, at his daughter’s home. Born on June 27, 1945, in Lafayette to the late Rod and Norma (Herndon) McKinney, Richard was a dedicated educator and a beloved family man.

Richard graduated from Jackson Central High School in 1963 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Education from Oakland City College of Evansville in 1968, followed by a master's degree from Indiana State in 1972. He married Ruth Ann Jones in 1972, and together they had three children before later divorcing.

He was a committed teacher at Benton County Community Schools for 41 years, specializing in elementary education, and retired in 2010. Richard was a member of Christ Fellowship Church in Monticello and enjoyed gardening, fishing, mowing, watching sports, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his children, Marc McKinney of Lafayette, Megan (Darral) Copas of Reynolds, and Mike McKinney of Fowler; his siblings, Charles Haan of Florida, Jill (Ken) Gentis of Florida, Marsha (Keith) Weedman, and Donna (Darrel) Brier of Attica; his cherished grandchildren, Kayla (Shawn Everett) McKinney, Sydney (Tyler) Johnson, Howard Copas, Tristen McKinney, Cody (Halee) Copas; and his great-grandchildren, Vaylnn, Atreus, Kai’ree, Harper, Jackson, and Milah. Preceding him in death along with his parents is a brother, Emmett McKinney.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 PM (EST) until the time of the Funeral Service at 4:00 PM (EST) on Friday, August 15, 2025, at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston, with Pastor Bob Ehle officiating.
