James W. Irwin

( March 26, 1945 - August 18, 2025 )

James W. Irwin, 80, of Lafayette, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, August 18, 2025. Born on March 26, 1945, in Indianapolis, IN, to the late Marion and Mary (Tuteweiler) Irwin, Jim was a beloved member of his community. A 1963 graduate of Brookston High School, he went on to serve proudly in the United States Navy until his honorable discharge in 1966. After his military service, Jim dedicated many years to working at Aloca of Lafayette before retiring.

Jim was known for his love of pool, participating in various leagues, and was an avid fan of the Boilermakers, Steelers, and was a phenomenal chess player. He was a cherished neighbor on Meadow Drive, known for his friendly nature and love of porch conversations. A history enthusiast, Jim enjoyed watching documentaries, but above all, he treasured his family, especially his grandchildren.  A testament to Jim, he never met a stranger and naturally put others before himself.

He is survived by his children, Janelle (Andy) Darling of Lafayette, Troy Irwin of Brookston, and April (Karl) Stokes of Brookston; his grandchildren, Brandon Cox, Cory (Britney) Cox, Lindsey (Ryan) Herbert, Jordan Irwin, Cody Irwin, Mason Stokes, and Collin Stokes; and great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Lane, Kade, and Ellie. Jim is also survived by his sisters, Janie Darling, Donna Dimonte, and Jeanie Young. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Denny, Rita, and Denise.

Friends may call from 4:00 PM (EST) until the time of the Funeral Service at 6:00 PM (EST) on Friday, August 22, 2025, at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston. A private burial with military honors will be held at a later date in Brookston Cemetery.
