Leona's Obituary
Leona M. Johnson, 92, of Chalmers, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Cumberland Pointe Health Campus of West Lafayette. Born on June 9, 1934, in Chalmers to the late Roy and Nora (Harris) Tully, Leona was a cherished member of her community.
Leona attended Chalmers High School and later married John Edward Johnson on October 10, 1969, in Monticello, sharing 53 wonderful years together until his passing on October 4, 2023. A devoted homemaker, Leona was a talented seamstress and provided daycare from her home for several years. She was a passionate fan of the Chicago Cubs and Purdue athletics.
Leona was a long-time parishioner of the Chalmers Community Church and was actively involved in the Women’s Christian Fellowship and the Chalmers American Legion Post 268 Women’s Auxiliary.
She is survived by her son, Paul (Pam) Spear of Lafayette; grandchildren, Nick Banes, Brian (Amy) Spear, and Jamie (Chip) Cotterman; and great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Kylee, Bryson, Ansley, Kendall, and Hagan. Leona is also survived by her siblings, Ester Eskew of Georgia, John Tully of Columbus, IN, and Alice Easley of Lafayette.
Preceding her in death, along with her husband and parents, are her daughter, Judy Banes; great-grandson, Parker Robertson; and siblings, Clarence Tully and Francis Rittenhouse.
A visitation will be held from 11:00 AM (EST) until the time of Funeral Service 1:00 PM (EST) Wednesday, August 26, 2026 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston. Pastor Joseph Bein of Chalmers Community Church to officiate.
A committal service will be held at 11:00 AM (EST) Monday, August 31, 2026 at Chalmers Community Cemetery.
