Clarence Ralph Gilbert Jr.

November 15, 1955 - February 25, 2026

Clarence Ralph Gilbert Jr., 70, of Remington, was called home in the early morning hours of Wednesday, February 25, 2026. He had been a patient at IU Health Arnett Hospital of Lafayette for two weeks.

Born in Rensselaer on November 15, 1955 to the late Edith (Perry) and Clarence R. Gilbert Sr., he resided in Jasper County his entire life. He migrated to Remington following his graduation from Rensselaer High School in 1973 and a brief stint at St. Joseph’s College.

Through his employment at several car dealerships and farm implement service outlets, his experience and expertise led him to opening his own business in Remington. Clarence’s Auto Body Repair operated for over 25 years where a devoted clientele brought their “sick” cars to the “car doctor” in a small, rural community in northern Indiana. Many cards and Christmas candies arrived at his shop from stranded motorists he had aided over the years and local customers that also became friends. It was much appreciated.

Clarence played a “wicked” bass guitar and sang with several local bands from Pegasus in his early years to his final band, Out a Round. He was an avid golfer and gained particular enjoyment from his beloved garden sharing his tomatoes and peppers with friends, neighbors, and customers.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dianne (Malone) Gilbert. His children, Alison (Corey) Kiger of Elwood, IN, Gabriel Gilbert of Ft. Wayne, IN, and stepdaughter, Tricia O’Donnell of Morton, IL. Clarence had 5 grandchildren: Cooper, Carter, Lexi and Harlow Kiger, and Graham Gilbert whom he loved dearly. His sister, Kathy (David) Alberts of Demotte, IN, and brothers, Barry Gilbert of Wasilla, AK and Dale (Terri) Heusing of Ft. Myers, FL. Stepfather, Paul Nist of Remington, IN, 9 nieces and nephews and 5 fur babies at home also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Carol Skaggs of Monticello, IN.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Clarence to Jasper County Animal Shelter (2430 W. Clark St. Rensselaer, IN, 47978).

Go hit that ball on those heavenly courses, Clarence! Fore!
