Evelyn's Obituary

Evelyn E. Bryan, 93, of Battle Ground, passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Friday, July 7, 2023.

She was born September 6, 1929 in Bushton, KS to the late Leonard T. and Anna (Kieft) Claar. Evelyn was a 1948 graduate of Carbondale Rural High School.  As a young girl Evelyn, grew up in many towns across Kansas. She had a great love of music and had a beautify soprano voice for which she won many awards in her youth.

Her marriage was to Charles E. Bryan on May 28, 1948 in the First Church of The Nazarene of Topeka, KS.  Charles and Evelyn moved throughout the country following Charles’ career opportunities. Those opportunities lead them from Kansas to Colorado, Montana, Oregon, Missouri and in 1967 made their final home in Battle Ground, Indiana.  Charles passed away on January 5, 2009.

As a young woman, Evelyn held many hourly jobs before finding her career with the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier out of Battle Ground and later at the main office in Lafayette. Nearing retiring, Evelyn and Charles began Bryan’s Biota, selling flowers and organically growing vegetables, raspberries, other fruits, vegetables, and nuts.

Evelyn loved spending her time gardening, growing flowers for wholesale and at the local farmer’s market. She truly was in her element while outdoors working the earth. She loved reading, especially about natural ways to live a healthy lifestyle.  Evelyn cherished time spent with her family and friends.  Her home was the gathering place and she especially enjoyed the many friends her children and grandchildren brought home.  She was always ready to gather and share in a meal with all who came.  She was known for pies and cobblers; especially her delicious raspberry pie or apple cobblers, which always seemed to be on hand along with a fresh pot of coffee.

Evelyn is survived by three of her four children, Charles S. (Janet) Bryan of West Lafayette, Donna C. (Larry) Akers of Lafayette, and David T. (Natasha) Bryan also of Lafayette. Three sisters, Mary Harrison of Topeka, KS, Roma Spear of Clarksville, TN, and Patty Barth of Topeka, KS. Nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.

She is preceded in death by her husband Charles and parents Leonard T. and Anna Claar.  Son, Carl W. Bryan; brothers, George, Russell, Frank, and Donald. Infant sisters Mildred and Mable and her oldest sister Lola McVey.
