Helen G. Horton, 98, of Brookston, passed away at 7:40 a.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at IU Arnett Hospital of Lafayette with her family by her side.
Helen was born September 24, 1926, in Cumberland County, Illinois to the late Archie and Sylvia (Nees) Wood. She attended high school in Rankin, Illinois.
Her marriage of 50 years was to the love of her life and best friend, Earl W. Horton, on November 21, 1943 in Rankin, Illinois.
Helen was a loving wife and mother to the couple’s five children, Karen, Larry, Brenda, Sandy and Dave. The wife of a farmer, Helen drove tractors, made meals, unloaded wagons, mowed fence rows and supported Earl whenever possible, all while raising their five children. She looked forward to planning, cooking for and hosting family events, the more people the better. Spending time with her family and their friends brought her great joy. Helen was very proud of her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid Chicago Cubs and Purdue Men’s Basketball fan, who never missed watching a game. Helen and Earl enjoyed participating in the Model A Car Club, wintering in Ft. Myers, Florida and the friendships made with their neighbors.
Helen was a longtime member of Badger Grove Community Baptist Church and the Round Grove Extension Homemakers Club. She was also a willing and accomplished Euchre player, provided it was bid with two decks. Helen loved being around others and also had a wonderful sense of humor; she enjoyed dressing up for the holidays, especially Halloween.
Surviving are her children, Karen Burns of Wolcott, Larry Horton (wife: Darlene) of Chalmers, Brenda Haynes (husband: Larry) of Monticello, Sandy Alumbaugh (husband: Dave) of Terre Haute, IN and Dave Horton (wife: Debbie) of Lafayette and two sisters, Dorothy Shookman and Nina Viehman. Helen adored her 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren and was very proud of having five generations in the family.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Earl, and three brothers, Bill, Keith and Archie “Junior” Wood and a sister, Mary Lou Saunders.
