Janet Lee Haskins, 87, of Monticello, passed away peacefully at 5:31 p.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at IU Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette. Surrounded by love and carried by faith, Janet completed her earthly journey with the same quiet grace and gentle spirit that defined her life.
She was born on August 11, 1938, in Westville, Illinois, to the late James and Mildred (Long) Cobble, who lovingly raised her on the family farm.
A proud graduate of Caitlin High School’s Class of 1956, Janet continued her education at Illinois State College, where she graduated with a degree in Home Economics Education.
She married Perry Haskins on May 25, 1962. He preceded her in death.
Janet was a faithful member of First Baptist Church for many years and enjoyed organizing funeral dinners, creating bulletin boards and attending weekly bible studies. She was also a faithful servant in the American Baptist Women's Association.
Early in her career, Janet shared her talents as a home economics teacher, guiding young minds and nurturing practical life skills. After welcoming a daughter into her life, she devoted herself wholeheartedly to being a homemaker, creating a home where love was abundant and everyone felt cherished. Later, when her daughter was grown, she began working as a weekend supervisor at a CDC group home, tenderly caring for residents as if they were her own. She also enjoyed her work as a special education aide at Roosevelt Junior High School. In her retirement years, she faithfully served the community for nearly ten years as a crossing guard at Meadowlawn Elementary School.
Janet truly had a servant’s heart. She found joy in helping others—offering a listening ear, a warm smile, and steady encouragement.
She delighted in life’s simple pleasures—playing Bunco with friends, baking and cooking for those she loved, sewing, patiently helping her grandchildren with their 4-H projects and offering her support at their various school and athletic events. Her kitchen was a place of comfort and joy, and her special dishes became treasured traditions, lovingly prepared for each grandchild. Nothing brought her greater
happiness than her grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom she adored and showered with affection, pride, and unwavering support.
Janet would often enjoy coffee and doughnuts at Kinser’s Bakery and hot fudge sundaes at The Sycamore, usually accompanied by her friends or grandchildren.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Darla Crabb (husband, Mike) of Monticello; three grandchildren, Lauren Mills (husband, Evan) of West Lafayette, IN, Jordan Crabb (wife, Hannah) of Westfield, IN, and Leah Crabb of Albuquerque, NM and five great-grandchildren, Lillian, Adelyn, Evelyn, Callen, and Scottie.
Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Bradley, and a brother, Jerry Cobble.
Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance on March 3, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, immediately followed by a service celebrating her life.
Burial will take place at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church or White County Animal Wellness Center.
Roscka Roth & Clapper Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
