Joan's Obituary
Joan Fleck Schley, 90, originally of Reynolds, passed away at 3:15 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2025, at White Oak Health Campus of Monticello.
Joan was born September 11, 1934, at home in Francesville, Indiana, to the late Edward August and Anna (Hintz) Fleck. Joan lived in Francesville from 1934 to 1942 before moving to Reynolds. She was Valedictorian of her 1952 graduating class at Reynolds High School. After high school, Joan attended and graduated in 1955 from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Lafayette. Joan then served in the Air Force as a nurse from 1956-1959, reaching the rank of First Lieutenant. Her first duty station was Tachikawa Air Force Base in Tokyo, Japan. While stationed in Japan, she was a flight nurse and flew Air Vac in and out of Dien Bien Phu, Viet Nam. Joan was Honorably discharged in 1959.
Her family was stationed in several places over the 20 years her husband was in the military. They lived in Germany twice; Munich and Stuttgart and travelled extensively throughout Europe during that time. While stationed in Stuttgart, Joan received her master’s degree in nursing from the University of Maryland in 1973. Joan loved being a nurse! Most of her nursing years were spent in labor & delivery, with occasional stints in orthopedics and as a head nurse. She retired from nursing at 70 years old.
Joan was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching college sports…but basketball was her favorite. She especially loved March madness! Her favorite teams were Georgia Tech, Purdue and anyone playing Georgia. She also enjoyed reading and crocheting.
Joan was very proud of the time she served in the military and was an active member of VFW Post 5080 Women’s Auxiliary of Lake City, Georgia. For many years, Joan and the ladies of the VFW would place flags on Veterans’ gravesites at area cemeteries for Memorial Day. She also crocheted many lap blankets for men and women in the local Veteran’s Hospital.
Joan is survived by her children, Ann Diener, Reynolds; Jane (husband Donnie) Smith, of St. Augustine, Florida; and John (wife Jacqui) Schley, Goose Creek, South Carolina; grandchildren, TJ (wife Elizabeth) Schley, Liz Schley, Jeremy (wife Courtney) Schley, Stephanie Schley, Levi Diener and Luke Diener; and great grandchildren, Ransom, Elsie, Milo, Lydia, Diana and Phineas Schley; and many nieces and nephews.
