Jack's Obituary
John F. “Jack” Stine, 86, of Chalmers, passed away at 9:33 a.m., Monday, September 18, 2023 at Indiana University Methodist Hospital of Indianapolis.
He was born February 3, 1937 in Hammond, Indiana to the late William M. and Jean M. (Summers) Stine. Jack was a Chalmers Cardinal all through high school until his senior year, graduating as a Brookston Bomber in 1955.
Jack joined the United States Marine Corp. right out of high school (Nov. 15, 1955) serving as an artillery driver in Okinawa, Japan until his honorable discharge (Nov. 14, 1958). Jack was proud of his service to his country and had a passion for military history, especially World War II. He always enjoyed sharing that knowledge in conversations with others. Jack was even more proud of his son Tim’s service and career in the United States Air Force. He was also a member of the Chalmers American Legion #268 participating in many funeral honor guard ceremonies.
Mr. Stine was a member of the Chalmers Community Church, and a 50 year member of the Monticello Masonic Lodge. Jack was also a long time member of the Merou Grotto in West Lafayette; he and Loretta enjoyed many memories there as a couple.
Jack was a maintenance foreman in the Biological Sciences building at Purdue University for 20 years until his retirement. Prior to that he held many jobs including working for the Town of Chalmers, Dick Kelly Excavating and owned/operated Stine and Sons Electric. Jack could build or fix anything but considered himself an electrician by trade.
Jack enjoyed meeting people and talking to them, he truly never met a stranger. Jack was always flashing his warm engaging smile and had a witty sense of humor. Jacks interest in history also extended to the town of Chalmers and the community. Jack enjoyed spending time in his shop woodworking. He modeled his Christian faith quietly through making crosses for others and felt a connection to God while working on each one. He always said he felt most connected at the family farm and in his workshop.
Surviving with his wife Loretta are his two sons, Timothy Stine (Tricia) of Chalmers and Terry Stine of Argos, IN. Jack loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, Alyssa Wise (Kenneth), DeAnna Kelley (Martin), Shawn Million (Gabriall) and John Stine (Devan) and all his great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death with his parents is his brother, William Stine.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 23, 2023 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston; Pastors Joseph Bein and Bill Henderson to officiate. Interment with military rites to follow in Chalmers Community Cemetery.
