John's Obituary
John Frederick Wood, 87, of Monticello, passed away peacefully at 10:59 a.m. on July 4, 2026, at his home surrounded by the place and life he loved.
Born on July 23, 1938, in Carroll County, Indiana, John was the son of the late Robert Henry Wood and Opal Kathrine (Matthews) Wood. He graduated from Burnettsville High School and spent his life rooted in the community he proudly called home.
On July 23, 1977, he married Karen Baum, in White County. Together they shared countless cherished memories. Karen survives in Monticello.
John started his career as a dairy farmer. He then dedicated 34 years and 7 months to the Indiana State Hospital, serving as head supervisor of the steam plant.
He was a member of the Masonic Libanus Lodge No. 154 in Monticello, Carroll, Cass and White County Coon Hunters, PKC, the American Kennel club and the Idaville Saddle Club. John won several awards and championships with his black and tan coon dogs. There was not a dog that he didn't think he could train and win with. John was an avid coon hunter throughout his life.
John knew there wasn’t much he couldn’t repair. He had a knack for using a roll of duct tape or scotch tape. In John’s world, there was very little that couldn’t be fixed with enough determination – and enough tape.
In his younger years, John enjoyed raising Appaloosa horses. Above all, he loved his dogs.
Along with his wife, Karen, he is survived by a daughter, Linda Brisbin (husband, Paul) of Burnettsville; stepchildren, Melody Tyner (husband, Drew) of Monticello; Mike MacOwan (wife, Barbara) of Monticello and Vanessa Cole (husband, Fred) of Patoka, IL; eight grandchildren, Tony Wood, Michelle Schodrouf, Donnie Fry, Ashley Wallace, Aaron Tatman, Brynn Stevens, Randy MacOwan and Alexus Cole; and several great grandchildren that he so lovingly called his “sugarburgers”.
He is preceded in death by two daughters, Dusty Schodrouf and Angela Wood; two sisters, Ilene Coble and Charlene Woodhouse and a brother, Bob Wood.
