Josephine M. Mathew

Josephine M. (DeLisa) Mathew, 97, of Wolcott, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 while residing at St. Anthony’s Nursing Center of Lafayette, Indiana.

Jo was born in Lynbrook, New York to the late Michael and Julia (Spinna) DeLisa. She married Marvin Mathew on July 9, 1949. He preceded her in death on February 4, 2026. Jo and Marvin lived and farmed in Wolcott all their life.

She was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Remington and while raising six children enjoyed bowling, golfing, and entertaining friends and family.

She is survived by her children Charlene (Rick) Plant of Rensselaer, Alan (Ruth) Mathew of Reynolds, Wendy (Barry) Hancock of Wolcott, Elaina (John) Balser of Valparaiso and Brian Mathew of Wolcott. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death along with her husband and parents is her son Marvin Mathew Jr., her daughter, Arlene (Bill) Sumpter of Iowa, four brothers and six sisters.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 from 9:00 – 10:45 AM (EST) at Sitz-Clapper Funeral Home of Remington. Funeral Mass 11:00 AM (EST) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Remington with Fr. Joshua Janko to officiate. Interment to follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
