In Loving Memory of Joseph Butz
Joseph Eugene Butz, 76, a lifelong resident of Brookston, Indiana passed away unexpectedly at his home on August 13, 2025.
Joe was born to Raymond and Ruth (nee Lennen) Butz on July 19, 1949. He graduated from Frontier High School, class of 1967, where he met his lifelong love and wife, Rita (nee Weston). Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, their son John (Gail) Butz of Brownsburg, IN and daughter Jenny (Russ) Scaffede of Mishawaka, IN.
Joe found his greatest joy in watching his children create their own lives, supporting them with pride and encouragement every step of the way. As a super proud grandpa, nothing lit up his face more than time spent with his three grandsons—Devin, Dylan, and Nathan—whose stories, milestones, and laughter filled his heart.
Joe's career began with Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union #157. He worked several years for Ed Grace/Shambaugh & Sons as Operations Manager.
In retirement, Joe enjoyed spending time with his friends, playing golf, and owned a cigar business where he loved sharing a fine cigar—especially alongside his son-in-law, Russ. His passion for his work and the relationships it fostered was matched only by his dedication to his community. He loved the town of Brookston and all the people he served as Town President. His years of leadership earned him recognition from Governor Eric Holcomb, who appointed him to the prestigious Council of the Sagamores of the Wabash.
Joe was also a dog lover, a man of humor and warmth, and someone who made everyone feel welcome. Whether through a shared story, a hearty laugh, or a quiet moment of kindness, he touched countless lives and left an enduring mark on those around him.
Preceding him in death are his parents and his brother, Jack.
Friends may call from 1 pm until the time of funeral service at 4 p.m. Tuesday, August 19th, 2025 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston; Rev. Lelan McReynolds to officiate. Interment to follow at Brookston Cemetery.
