Peggy J. Mills

July 09, 1957 - May 22, 2022

Peggy J. Mills, 64, and lifelong resident of Brookston, passed away at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, May 22, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.  Peggy had bravely battled cancer for the last 16 months.

Peggy was born July 9, 1957 in Lafayette to the late Ralph B. and Mary Agnes (Garvin) DeWeese.  Growing up, she attended Brookston Elementary School before the consolidation, graduating from Frontier High School, class of 1975.

Her marriage was to Donald H. Mills on July 7, 1990 in Lafayette; he survives.

Mrs. Mills was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Reynolds and past member of Psi Iota Xi sorority.

Peggy had a 35 year career in banking rising from Teller to Assistant Vice President of Farmers State Bank in Brookston.  Her favorite part of banking was the friendships made while serving the Brookston community.

Peggy enjoyed watching her kids and grandkids excel in sports, especially softball and baseball.  She took great pride in supporting her family while successfully showing cattle at the national, state and local levels.  An avid supporter of Purdue athletics, especially football and men’s basketball, the better the seats the more fired up she would get.  A special memory was the trip she and Don took to the 2001 Rose Bowl.  In her retirement years, she enjoyed traveling and visiting her daughter, Brooke and her family, in Denver, Colorado.

Surviving with her husband Don, are her children, Brooke Bushong-Luu (husband: Hoang) of Denver, CO, Justin Bushong (wife: Candace) of Brookston, John D. Mills of Brookston and Caitlin Mills (companion: Jeff Coats) of Lafayette.  Peggy cherished spending time with her grandchildren, Parker, Tinley and Mae and Maci Coats.  Peggy had a soft spot for her dogs, Daisy, Izzy and Spunky.

Preceding her in death with her parents is a brother, William “Bill” DeWeese, who was killed in action in Vietnam.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2022 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston.  A rosary service to be held at 10:45 a.m. Friday, May 27, 2022 immediately followed by the funeral service; Fr. Mark Walter to officiate.  Interment to follow in the Brookston IOOF Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society in her name.
