Phyllis' Obituary
Phyllis Y. McGill, 79, of Brookston, passed away at 5:05 p.m. Saturday, August 10, 2024, at Franciscan Health St. Elizabeth in Lafayette.
Phyllis was born September 6, 1944, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette to the late William J. “Bill” and Lenora Irene (Bush) McCoy. Phyllis was a 1962 graduate of Brookston High School where she met her future husband, Larry McGill.
Phyllis and Larry were married after Larry’s service in the United States Army on April 20, 1974, at the Brookston Federated Church. The couple were happily married 49 years. Larry preceded her in death on May 18, 2023.
Phyllis worked off and on for Standard Oil in Brookston for 25 years retiring in 1995.
She was an amazing cook who made the best Blueberry and Peach Cobbler as well as Mexican Fudge. She enjoyed her vegetable garden and took great pride in keeping a neat and tidy yard. Above all, Phyllis loved spending time with her family hosting fish fry’s and fall bonfires and supporting all her nieces and nephews and their children during their sporting events. In her free time, she loved to read and solve crossword puzzles. She and Larry enjoyed traveling across the United States, opting for backroad routes to avoid the interstate anytime possible. One of her and Larry’s most memorable trips was to Alaska. Phyllis also collected Longaberger baskets and went so far as to take a class in basket weaving in Lafayette so she could make her own. She also enjoyed a good Western and watching home improvement shows on TV.
Phyllis had a huge heart and was very loving and supportive to everyone, she also had a feisty slightly stubborn side as well. She enjoyed joking with her great-nieces and nephews and giving them a hard time; she was a wonderful Aunt.
Surviving is her sister, Judith Payton of Battle Ground; a nephew, Scott Johnson of Brookston; her great-nephew, Michael Johnson (Jennifer) of West Lafayette; her great-niece, Autumn Smith (John W. Wilson) of West Lafayette and her 9 great-great nieces and nephews, Alexis Macho (Drew), Jordan Monroe (Kate), Jaedan Johnson (Lacie Mears), Noah Johnson, Alivia Smith (Aiden Spoor), Reese Johnson, Carter Smith, Cooper Smith and Clara Smith. Also surviving are her great-great-great nephew and niece, Wyatt and Wrenlee Monroe.
Preceding her in death with her husband, Larry, and her parents is a brother-in-law, Troy Payton and her grandparents, Aussie and Myrtle Bush and Howard and Lydia McCoy.
