Richard Poindexter, 86, formerly of Wolcott, passed away at 9:00pm, Wednesday, June 21st at Majestic Care of Lafayette.
Richard was born December 25, 1936 in White County, Indiana to the late Tim and Christine (Sims) Poindexter. Richard attended Wolcott High School and later served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany for a portion of his service years.
His first marriage was to Barbara Altman on October 10, 1959. Richard and Barbara had two children, Kristie (Susan McHan) and Steven (Angie) who survive. Richard also adored his grandchildren, Erin & Loren Poindexter McHan, Zachary Albin (Abby), and his two great grandchildren, Sophie & Calliope Albin.
Richard later married Faith (Bonnell) Gillen on April 19th, 1998. He called Faith the love of his life and she sadly preceded him in death on March 14, 2018. We believe Faith took a bit of his spirit along with her when she passed.
Richard was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Reynolds. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Richard owned and operated service stations in Wolcott, ran M&P Construction with his favorite brother-in-law, and then began working at Alcoa Aluminum in Lafayette where he stayed for 26 years before finally retiring. He always had many stories to share about his days in the factory.
Richard loved sports and had many hobbies – fast and slow pitch softball, bowling, swimming, riding and collecting motorcycles, camping, wood working, tinkering in his shop and creating projects just to keep himself entertained. He & Faith spent their winters in Florida and they loved attending local ball games and were even season ticket holders for the University of Florida & Purdue Women’s Basketball teams.
Surviving along with his children are step-children Jacquelyn Gillen of Lafayette, Mark Gillen (wife: Deb) of Zionsville, Mick Gillen (wife: Rose) of Frankfort, Michelle Gillen of Lafayette and Joe Gillen (wife: Patty) of Greenfield. Also surviving are 5 step-grandchildren (Jon (wife: Cassidy), Claire (husband: Justin), Sam, Seth and Alex) and 4 step great-grandchildren (Savannah, Holston, Eleanor and James); siblings, Tim Poindexter of Wolcott, Robert Poindexter of Lafayette & Joyce Worthington (husband: Don) of Fort Collins, Colorado. Richard is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death along with his parents are siblings, James Poindexter and Carolyn (Poindexter) Burrell.
Friends may call from 1pm (EST) until the time of the funeral service at 2pm (EST) Monday, July 3rd, 2023 at Foster-Clapper Funeral Home, 202 W. School Street, Wolcott, Indiana. Interment to follow in Fair Haven Cemetery in Mulberry.
