Virgil's Obituary

Virgil Lee Shultz, 93, of Brookston, passed away at 6:00 a.m. Friday, December 23, 2022, at Creasy Springs of Lafayette.

Virgil was born April 10, 1929 and was the oldest son of Paul and Nellie (Victor) Shultz.  Virgil graduated from Brookston High School where he was always an active sports participant, including basketball.  He learned to fly, receiving his private pilot license at age 18.

On September 16, 1950, Virgil married the love of his life, Doris Jeanne Schrader at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Lafayette, a marriage that would span 72 years.  She survives.

A lifelong farmer, Virgil loved farming and flying.  He was an active member of the International Flying Farmers since 1980 and served as International President in 1991.  Together, Virgil and Doris took trips to every state except Maine, always enjoying the friendships and associations they made with other Flying Farmers and their families.

Virgil took an active role in 4-H, completing his ten years and then guiding his five children through ten years each.  He served on the Tippecanoe County Fair Association Board for many years.

Mr. Shultz was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in West Lafayette and a former 50 year member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Reynolds, where he was a member of the Holy Name.

Virgil and Doris enjoyed Friday and Saturday nights playing cards with neighbors and friends.  He also was a fan of Purdue Football and Basketball and the Chicago Cubs.  Above all, Virgil loved spending time with his family.

Surviving with his wife Doris, are five children, Phillip (MaryJo) Shultz of Brecksville, OH, Thomas (Carolyn) Shultz of Brookston and Kenneth (Rita) Shultz, Margaret (Terry) Grogan and Shirley (David) Frist, all of Battle Ground; two sisters, Evelyn Scott of Zionsville and Marilyn Denton of Monticello, and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Shultz of Lafayette.  Virg especially enjoyed his twenty wonderful grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death with his parents, is a sister, Alyce Tatum; a brother, Galen Shultz and two brothers-in-law, Bud Scott and Gordon Denton.
