Wilmeda R. Cain

Wilmeda R. (Wortman) Cain, 97, of Lafayette, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024 at her home. She was born July 4, 1926 in Remington to the late John and Elizabeth (Nuttle) Wortman. Wilmeda was a 1946 graduate of Klondike High School and later in life received her beautician license from O’Bryan Styling Academy of Lafayette. 

Her marriage was to the love of her life Paul E. Cain Sr. on August 1, 1946. Paul preceded her in death on October 27, 2011. 

Wilmeda enjoyed sewing, reading, tending to the garden, and spending time with her family. She worked as a rural carrier with West Lafayette USPS and later as a clerk with Lafayette USPS. Following her retirement from the Post Office, Wilmeda enjoyed owning and operating Cains Styling. In her younger years, Wilmeda worked as a cashier at the Piggly Wiggly and assistant cashier at Commonwealth Insurance of Lafayette. 

Wilmeda is survived by her three sons, Paul E. Cain Jr. (wife: Mary), James E. Cain (wife: Evelyn), and Perry J. Cain (wife: Jo Ann). She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. 

Preceding her in death along with her husband and parents are four brothers, Robert Wortman, John Wortman, Charles Wortman, and Richard Wortman. 

Friends may call from 12:00 PM (EDT) until the time of Funeral Service 1:00 PM (EDT) Friday, May 10, 2024 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston. Interment to follow in Remington Cemetery. 

In lieu of floral arrangements, memorial contributions may be made in Wilmeda’s name to Food Finders Food Bank of Lafayette.
