Maurice "Jim" Humphreys

August 12, 1930 - July 7, 2018

Maurice James “Jim” Humphreys, 87, Wolcott passed away in Westminster Village, West Lafayette, on Saturday, July 7, 2018.

Jim, as he was known to all, was born in Wolcott on August 12, 1930. He was the third child to the late Maurice and Ruth Humphreys and resided on the farm where he was born until January 2018. He graduated from Wolcott High School in 1948 and served in the Army for 2 years in Germany during the Korean War and was a member of the Wolcott America Legion. Jim was a lifelong farmer and auctioneer and traveled throughout the US working various cattle and horse sales. He was a member of the Indiana Auctioneers Association and taught several courses at the Kansas City Auction school.

Jim was a lifelong member of the Meadow Lake Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder, Trustee and Cemetery Board member; and served on the West Point Township Advisory Board for several years. He volunteered his time to his church, 4-H and FFA clubs as well as various other charities; many times anonymously and in the background. He never met a 2 or 4 legged stray that he wouldn’t bring home or give a meal to. He didn’t believe in strangers. Jim was a great prankster and loved getting the last laugh with his friends and family. He very much enjoyed all animals, but especially horses and dogs. He was surely greeted at the pearly gates by a whole raft of dogs but especially Esmirelda, King, Happy, Ginger, Ethel, Daisy, Margaret, Walter, Tubby, Sally, Chewy and Otis.

On June 9, 1963 Jim married Gloria Hurliman in Watseka, Illinois. They were able to celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary before his passing. Jim and Gloria have two daughters, Sara (Bill) Murphy of Avon, IN and Rebecca Klueppel of Eddyville, KY. They also have 4 grandchildren; Courtney, Rachael, Jake and Sam Klueppel all of Eddyville. Jim was preceded in death by a brother John Humphreys and sister Martha Humphreys Lemming as well as a very special cousin, Ruth Klink.

The family is asking for an informal visitation from 2 – 6 PM (EST) and a sharing of ‘Jim stories’ beginning at 6 PM (EST) at Meadow Lake Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, July 11, 2018. Rev. Dr. Lelan McReynolds to officiate. Interment to follow with military rites for a sunset burial in Meadow Lake Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s name to the following: Alzheimer’s Association (50 E. 91st St. Indianapolis, IN 46240), dog treats or dogfood can be brought to Meadow Lake Presbyterian Church during visitation and will be donated to a local animal shelter, Meadow Lake Presbyterian Church, or donations to the charity of the donor’s choice.
