Jerrell Lee May

August 3, 1934 - March 30, 2016

Jerrell Lee May, 81, died suddenly of a heart attack on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, after many long months of cancer treatment.  Jerry was born August 3, 1934, in Rensselaer, Indiana.  He was the first son of William McKinley May and Mary Beauchamp May of Remington, Indiana. His mother, Mary May, was a beloved high school English teacher, and his father, Bill May, was a school principal and administrator.     Jerry grew up in Remington, Indiana, and graduated valedictorian from Remington High School in 1952. He earned a degree in Business Administration from Indiana University in 1956, where he played clarinet, performing with the Indiana University Marching 100 in Dwight D. Eisenhower’s 1953 inaugural parade. His love of music continued throughout his life.      He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959, and in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1963. He was a lifetime member of Remington Masonic Lodge No. 351.      In 1959, Jerry moved to New York City, and began a successful career as an advertising executive at agencies including Deutsch & Shea, L.W. Frohlich & Co., and Benton & Bowles.      He met his wife of 46 years, the former Dona Bridges, in 1965, and they married in 1969. Jerry and Dona had two wonderful daughters, Ashley Kirsten in 1973, and Kendra Elizabeth in 1977.       In 1974, Jerry and Dona chose to leave New York, and Jerry accepted a position with Richmond, Virginia firm Cargill, Wilson & Acree, with subsequent moves to Atlanta and Pittsburgh, before settling back in Richmond, where they remained until retiring to the Villages, Florida, in 2006.      He is survived by a brother, Paul May (Jeanie), of Bradenton, Florida, his devoted wife, Dona, and his daughters, Ashley May Nash (Richard) of Louisville, Kentucky, and Kendra May of Washington, DC, as well as two perfect grandchildren, Mary May Nash, 8, and Richard Rodes Nash, 5.
