Stanley J. Steill, 70, a lifelong Lafayette resident, passed away at 8:00 a.m. Thursday, October 30, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family. He had been battling cancer. He was born June 29, 1944 in Lafayette at St. Elizabeth Hospital to the late John J. and Edna (Schmitt) Steill and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School. Mr. Steill served in the National Guard from 1964 until being honorably discharged in 1970. His marriage was to Carol Carr on April 20, 1968 in St. Lawrence Catholic Church. She survives. Stan retired from ALCOA in 2004 from the maintenance department after 42 years of service. Mr. Steill was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, the National Rifle Association, Wildcat Valley Gun Club and the ALCOA Retirement Club. He coached softball and baseball for East Tipp. Summer Rec. from the mid 70's to the late 80's. An avid outdoorsman, Stan loved hunting deer and turkey and fishing. He also enjoyed woodworking. Surviving with his wife Carol are their two daughters, Susan Lowery (husband: Troy) and Mindy Wells (husband: Aaron) both of Lafayette; two brothers, Nicholas Steill (wife: Laurie) of Columbia City, IN and Edward Steill (wife: Joyce) of Battle Ground and three sisters, Patricia Hayden of Monticello, Ruth Price (husband: Dean) of Brown County and Theresa Steill of Lafayette. Stan loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, Megan, Taylor and Ty. Preceding him in death with his parents is a son, Willie and two sisters, Nancy Heick and Jean Murphy. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral mass at 12 p.m. (noon) Saturday, November 1, 2014 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church (1916 Meharry St, Lafayette, IN 47904); Fr. Eric Underwood to officiate. Interment to follow in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Lafayette. Memorials may be made in his name to the St. Lawrence Catholic Church - Building Fund.
