Alma Jean Wann

August 16, 1920 - October 10, 2014

Alma Jean Wann, 94, of Indianapolis, formerly of Chalmers, passed away at 3:30 p.m. Friday, October 10, 2014 at Brook Dale Healthcare of Indianapolis. She was born August 16, 1920 in Decatur, Alabama to the late T.W. and Eva L. (Clardy) Naylor. She attended Business College and was a graduate of Beauty College in Birmingham, Alabama. She was a mess sergeant for the A squadron 120th Army Air Force base unit and was stationed in Westover, Massachusetts where she met and fell in love with her future husband Earl E. Wann. The couple wed on December 17, 1943. Jean and Earl lived on the family farm in Chalmers for many years. He farmed and she handled the homemaker duties. She was a wonderful cook, seamstress and gardener. During that period, Jean owned and operated the Chalmers Beauty Shop for many years, eventually moving it to the family farm. The Wann home was always warm and inviting and hosted many family get togethers including bridge parties, summer golf outings and the Christmas antique gift exchange. She and the Wann sisters enjoyed their summer trips finding and collecting antiques. She was also a member of the Chalmers American Legion Women's Auxiliary. In 1994 Jean and Earl retired to Foley, Alabama where he worked at the Winn Dixie and she played in bridge tournaments with her friends at the Newcomer's Club. Jean enjoyed her morning cup of coffee sitting at the kitchen table reading the paper or doing crossword puzzles. Earl passed away on October 26, 2001 and she moved back to Indianapolis to be closer to her family. Surviving are her children, Judy Hampton (husband: Ron) and Dan Wann, both of Indianapolis and her brother, Bob Messer (wife: Mary) of Birmingham, AL. Jean loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, Amy, Sarah, Lauren and Andrew and her great-grandson, Aiden. She is also survived by several half brothers and sisters on her father's side that she met late in life. Preceding her in death with her parents and husband is a sister, Marthaloa and a brother, Jack. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of funeral service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston. Interment to follow in Chalmers Community Cemetery.
