Donald E. Hartman Sr.

January 7, 1947 - August 15, 2013

Our world has lost one of the good guys. Donald E. Hartman Sr. was called home at 6:15pm, August 15, 2013 with his family by his side at his Kentland home. He had been battling against cancer for the previous 9 months. Don was born January 7, 1947 to Minor "Mike" and Jean (Burman) Hartman of Shelby, Indiana. He was active in 4-H and FFA, showing cattle for many years. After graduating from Lowell high school in 1965 Don entered the US Army. He served as military police for 3 years and served overseas in Heidelberg Germany. Upon his return to the states, he worked with his family on the farm and then went to work at Globe Industries in Lowell. He married his wife Teri Conners on May 13, 1972. Don & Teri moved to a house just south of Lowell and began raising their family. Teri worked as a radio dispatcher for the Indiana State Police post in Lowell and in 1979 Don attended the ISP academy to begin his distinguished career in public service. Don's graduation from the academy was a memorable day. While attending the ceremony in Plainfield, Teri went into labor. After a quick trip to the hospital their second son was born. Don & Teri moved to their family home in rural Kentland in 1984 with their 3 children, Don Jr., Doug, and Amanda. The kids grew up attending the Mt Zion Church in rural Kentland & South Newton schools. All of the kids were involved with 4-H, Scouts and other activities. For each of the activities the kids participated in, you would typically find Don & Teri volunteering their time and skills as well. Don's time with the Indiana State Police earned him a reputation of a firm but fair Trooper with a great work ethic. He was recognized many times by many agencies and groups for his work and dedication to public safety. In 1981 Don and Trooper Gary Scott were assigned to investigate complaints of ticket fixing in Lake County. What started as a 45-day investigation ended 5 years later with multiple federal indictments for corruption. In 1996 Don earned the Indiana State Police's highest honor, the Gold Star Award for Valor after saving the life of a woman from a burning vehicle on I-65. His 26 year career ended in retirement in 2006 with the beginning if his first term as Sheriff of Newton County in 2007. With more than a quarter century working the road as a trooper, Sheriff Hartman made sure the employees came first. He fought for and gained manpower to bring staffing levels in line with the needs of Newton County's citizens. He even kept his campaign promise to drive the oldest car in the fleet, because he believed it was the deputies that needed the best equipment. The squad car he drove was outfitted with spare radios, lights and consoles from retired vehicles. He dedicated his time as Sheriff to the benefit of the employees of the department and citizens of Newton County in the best way possible. This man's dedication to the betterment of his community was evident both on and off the job. Don was the Vice-President of the Newton County Fair Board and could always be found volunteering his time during the fair. He was also the President of the Newton County 4-H Council. He leaves behind a legacy that will live on for generations to come. Don's dedication to community was second only to one thing; his family. He leaves behind his wife Teri, son Don Jr.(wife DonElla) of rural Oxford Indiana, son Doug (wife Kate) of rural Fowler, Indiana, daughter Amanda Hicks (husband Jamie) of Chesterton, Indiana, mother Jean (Burman) Hartman of Kentland, and brother Jim Hartman of Roselawn Indiana. His goal after retirement was to be a full time grandpa to his 4 granddaughters, one grandson and grandchild on the way. On Saturday August 24 family, friends and colleagues will come to the South Newton High School to honor Donald E Hartman Sr. Visitation will begin at 9a (central) with the funeral service at 1p. Rev. Larry Klingler Officiating. Burial will follow at Buswell Cemetery, Kentland IN. Military rites at graveside. Honor Guard provided by Indiana State Police.
