Bethel (Bell) Shafer, 80, of Kentland, died at 11:18 p.m., January 15, 2013, at Jasper County Hospital of Rensselaer, Indiana. She was born November 5, 1932, in Sayre, Oklahoma to the late Babe Claude Bell and Gladys (Wilcox) Bell. She graduated from Sweetwater High School in Sweetwater, Oklahoma in 1950. Her marriage was to John C. Shafer on June 6, 1957, in Sayre, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on October 16, 2011. Throughout her life, Bethel had been a resident of Oklahoma, Kentucky, Texas, and came to Kentland in 1982. Bethel was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Kentland. In her youth, she enjoyed equestrian activities. Bethel also enjoyed playing Golf and Bridge. Surviving are son, John C. Shafer, Jr.of Rensselaer; two sisters, Wanda Laskowski of Grand Junction, Colorado and Phoebe Brown of Dunn, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Chelsea, Paige, Hollison, Dalton, and Dade Jackson; and Nickolaus MacManus of whom the Shafers were legal guardians. No services are to be held. Memorials in her name may be made to the Jasper County Hospice.
