Carl Winter Hassel, 85, of Allegan, Michigan, died Friday, November 11, 2011 at Briarwood Assisted Living of Allegan, Michigan. He was born March 6, 1926 in Buffalo, New York to the late Carl and Adelaide (Winter) Hassel. He graduated from Kenmore High School in 1944. He went on to receive his BA in Education from Taylor University, MA in Education from Ball State University and his PhD in Education from Syracuse University. His marriage was to Avis Madge Morehead on July 3, 1949 in Wolcott. She preceded him in death on August 8, 1998. Throughout his life, Carl lived in Kenmore, NY, Pensacola, FL, Upland, IN, Battle Creek, MI, Syracuse, NY, Media, PA, Moorestown, NJ, Hyattsville, MD, Southfield, MI, Farmington Hills, MI, Novi, MI, Plainwell, MI and Allegan, MI. Carl served in the United States Navy, where he worked in Aircraft Maintenance. He also worked in Aircraft Maintenance for Remington Rand. He worked as a minister in Indiana, a High School Counselor in Michigan, he was the Superintendent of Schools in New Jersey, Maryland and Michigan, and served on the Board of Directors at Taylor University. He was a member of Rotary Club and ROMEO, and enjoyed traveling and sports. Surviving are two children, Stephen Hassel and Julie McComis (husband: Pat) and six grandchildren, Sean Berge, Matthew McComis, Adelaide Hassel, Ian Berge, Katherine McComis and Dana Berge. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and a brother, Richard Hassel. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until the time of Funeral Service at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 18, 2011 at Ward Evangelical Presbyterian Church, (40000 6 Mile Road, Northville, MI 48168) with Pastor Dave Owens officiating. Interment prior to services on November 16, 2011 at Meadow Lake Cemetery of Wolcott, IN. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Taylor University, (Attn: Development Dept. 236 W.
