John A. James, 75, of Battle Ground, died on Monday, March 9, 2009 at 7:50 p.m. in Home Hospital. He was born on August 4, 1933 to the late Rufus and Oacle (Burris) James. He was a graduate of Reynolds High School. His marriage was to Dona Sue Humburg on September 22, 1953 in Monticello Christian Church. She survives. Mr. James served in the United States Army from 1954-1956 as a radio operator. He operated a family farm south west of Reynolds for 35 years. After farming he drove a truck for Standard Oil for 6 years. He then was supervisor of maintenance for the U. S. Post Office on State Road 26 in Lafayette for 18 years. Currently, he was director of maintenance at GreenTree Assisted Living of West Lafayette. Mr. James was a longtime member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lafayette, was a member of the American Legion Post 492 and VFW of West Lafayette. He served on the board of directors of The Knapp Burn Foundation based in Bloomington, Illinois. Surviving with his wife is his daughter, Sue Phebus (husband: Doug) of West Lafayette and five sisters, Annabelle Clark of California, Charlotte Swartz of Indianapolis, Betty Criswell of Monon, Rosa Mae Young of Speedway and Marilyn Montgomery of Louisville, KY. One of the greatest joys in John's life was spending time with his two grandchildren, Greg and Allison, whom he loved very much. Friends and family may call from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 12 in Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston. Service there 10 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2009. Rev. David M. Doane to officiate. Interment to follow in St. James Lutheran Cemetery, Reynolds. Memorials may be made in his honor to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
