Richard "Dick" Spence, 71, of Lafayette, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at Clarian Arnett Hospital. He was born on December 24, 1937 in West Point, Indiana to the late Ed and Mary (Sheroan) Spence. Dick was a 1953 graduate of Attica High School. His marriage was to Janet "Carol" Morrison on July 2, 1960. She survives. He was stationed in Germany as a tank gunner in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1959. Mr. Spence worked at Rea Magnet Wire in Lafayette for 49 years and 3 month's and retired as Enamel Service Supervisor in January of 2009. He was a member of Good Shepard Baptist Church of Lafayette. Dick enjoyed upkeep on his house, Purdue basketball, attending church and was a big NASCAR fan. Surviving with his wife are four sons, Tony M. Spence, Terry T. Clingerman, Ricky L. Spence and David M. Spence all of Lafayette; a brother, Larry Spence of Lafayette and three sisters, Mary Ella, Dorothy and Phyllis. Dick loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, Janine Carol, Stephanie, Brittany, Jamie and David Jr. and his 7 great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 12 p.m. (noon) Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Good Shepherd Baptist Church (1024 Elizabeth St. Lafayette). Pastor Jim Chase to officiate. Entombment to follow in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens Cemetery, West Lafayette. Preceding him in death with his parents are a son, Thomas "Joe" Spence and his brother, Walter "Bud" Spence. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Richard L. Spence memorial fund for a scholarship to benefit his grandchildren.
