Laura Bernfield
May 11, 1962 – April 13, 2023
Laura Joann (McClain) Bernfield peacefully transitioned into the arms of her Savior at home on April 13, 2023, surrounded by the love of her family. Laura was born in Fort Richardson, Alaska, on May 11, 1962, to Hosea & Sylvia (Foege) McClain. On December 30, 1979, Laura married “her man,” Jeffrey Lee Bernfield at Oak Grove Christian Church. Their marriage was a 43-year journey of true and genuine love.
Laura gave birth to a son, Hosea Robert on August 14, 1980, and a daughter, Jessica Susanne on February 28, 1982. Laura was also a mother to Jeff’s two older sons, Mark Anthony and Jeffrey Lloyd. Laura loved her family immensely, including her parents, siblings, 16 nieces and nephews and 8 grandchildren. She enjoyed hosting family gatherings for holidays in her barn and organized “Mamaw Camp” each summer for her grandchildren where she traveled with, taught and made many cherished memories.
Laura graduated from Delphi Community High School in 1980, Ivy Tech’s Nursing program in 1994 and received her BSN in Nursing from IUPUI-Kokomo in 2006. Upon receiving her RN degree, she worked as a labor & delivery nurse at White County Memorial for several years, followed by over 25 years teaching Health Science Career students at North White and Twin Lakes High School. Laura adored her students and found tremendous joy guiding younger generations to achieve their career goals and serve their community in the fields of healthcare and nursing.
Laura was a member of Oak Grove Christian Church for over 40 years and served as the church’s pastor from 2020-2022. In her younger years she was the Bible School teacher for the preschool children, teaching and leading them in songs for the congregation, and helped organize and prepare countless chili suppers, meals and dinners.
Laura “never met a stranger" and embodied a spirit of selfless generosity and unconditional love. She will continue to be deeply missed by her family, friends and community.
