Melvin H. “Mel” Downey, 66, of Monticello, IN.  passed away Saturday, January 6, 2024 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by those that loved him most.  He was born in Monticello on September, 26, 1957 to the late Max Downey and Norita (Hunt) Downey.  

Mel married Tammy Smith on May 16, 1992 in Monticello.  He was a hardworking man, with a lifetime of farming and did construction work as well.   Mel enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing.  He was an amazing cook and a master of the smoker and grill.  Mel had a vast knowledge of so many different things and could figure out how to fix or build about anything.  He could win over most anyone by his sense of humor.  Mel was an honest man and had a “loveable” personality.  

A dedicated family man who is survived by his wife, Tammy Downey; two children:  Cole (Haylie) Downey and Heather (Steven) Fisher; bonus daughter:  Nikki (Roy) Rich; granddaughter:  Havyn Fisher; and his cherished dog:  River.  

Mel was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Norita Downey; and brother Mark Downey.  

Visitation will be Thursday, January 11, 2024 from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Miller Roscka Funeral Home.  A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.  Memorial contributions are suggested to Monon Veterinary Clinic.  Miller Roscka is honored to be handling the arrangements.
