Herbert L. Miller

January 14, 1927 - May 8, 2015

Herbert L. Miller, 88, of Brookston died at 8:35 pm, Friday, May 8, 2015 at University Place of West Lafayette. He was born January 14, 1927 to the late Herbert Curtis and Ida Pearl (Sturgeon) Miller at home in Pine Township, Benton County during a snow storm. The physician who delivered him nicknamed him "snow bird" because the doctor had to ride a horse to get the house. He was a 1944 graduate of Earl Park High School and was a World War II Army Veteran. He was stationed in Germany and helped rebuild the damaged country and also was stationed in Strasbourg, Austria where he filled in temporarily as a mail runner and delivered mail to the Von Trapp Home which was being used as offices for the military. He married the love of his life Martha Jean Fountain on August 1, 1948 at the Delphi Presbyterian Church. She preceded him in death on September 28, 2006. Throughout his life Herb had lived in Benton County and Brookston. He was a farmer his entire life. He started in Benton County and continued farming after moving to Brookston in 1951. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in West Lafayette and attended Badger Grove Community Baptist Church and Oxford United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Octagon Masonic Lodge #511 and the Brookston American Legion. He enjoyed gardening and canning his produce, antique tractors, fishing and hunting, and taught himself to make homemade bread from scratch. In his younger years he would go on hunting trips with his father and brothers. Martha would like to travel and would ask Herb to go with her. One particular trip she persuaded him to go on a trip to Europe but telling him that they could visit Strasbourg, Austria so he could return to where he was stationed. Herb really enjoyed that trip! Herb and Martha also enjoyed winter trips to Florida and purchased a house in Port Charlotte and spent 21 years of winters in that house. He is survived by his children, Dan (Melinda) Miller of Talladega, AL, Julie (Kermit)Baumgartner of Clinton, MS, Robert "Randy" Miller of Round Grove Township, and deaf twins, Scott Edgar Miller of Remington and Jill (Robert) Acquafredda of Arcadia; 6 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren. Along with his parents and wife, Martha he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Nicole; great granddaughter, Genevieve; 2 brothers, Curt and Byron Miller; and his daughter-in-law Annette L. Park-Miller, who was very special to Herb. The family would like to express a sincere "Thank you" to University Place for all of their love and caring and for allowing Herb's favorite dog "Addy" to visit him.
