Helen L. Wood, 89, of Wolcott, died at 4:20 am, Friday, September 6, 2013 at Monticello Assisted Living. She had been in failing health for several months. She was born November 13, 1923 in Rensselaer. She graduated from Rensselaer High School in 1941. Her marriage was to John E. Wood on February 28, 1944 in Newport, Rhode Island. He preceded her in death on September 8, 1980. She was a lifelong resident of Wolcott and spent her adult years as a farm wife, helping where needed. She was a proud member of Young-At-Heart home demonstration club, a founding member of the Butterflies-Wolcott Library group, a lifelong member of the Wolcott United Methodist Church, and also attended Living Hope Fellowship Church in Lafayette. She also had been active in Lion's Club and Order of the Eastern Star. She began work in Wolcott as a telephone operator for the United Phone Company, moved on to employment with Thayer Industries, and finished her work career as a manager for the People's Store in Wolcott. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and traveling. She also enjoyed classic rock and viewing classic television programs. She is survived by her son, James R. Wood, of Wolcott. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Elaina Robinson, and two great-granddaughters, Molly and Madeline Robinson, all of Louisville, KY. Preceding her in death with her husband is a son, David A. Wood; a brother, George Duggins; and a sister, Jean Taylor. Friends may call from 10 am until the time of funeral service at 11 am, Monday, September 9, 2013, at Foster-Clapper Funeral Home of Wolcott. Pastor Wayne Williams to officiate. Interment to follow in Memory Gardens of Rensselaer. Memorials may be made to the Wolcott Community Library in honor of Helen's lifelong love of reading.
