Viola Irene Barrett, 97, of Monticello, died at 12:00 p.m. (noon) Monday, April 9, 2012 at Monticello Assisted Living and Healthcare Center. She was born August 1, 1914 in Lafayette to the late William G. and Minnie (Kahn) Johnson. She attended schools in Brookston and Lafayette. Her marriage was to Wilbur C. Barrett on February 24, 1950. He preceded her in death on December 31, 2005. She was a homemaker and also worked two years at ALCOA during the war. Viola was a member of Monticello Christian Church and she enjoyed sewing, crocheting and gardening. Surviving is a stepson, Larry Barrett (wife Vicki) of Elkhart, a stepdaughter Janet Davenport, several nieces, nephews, and step grandchildren, and a sister-in-law, Lillian Newhard of Lafayette. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until the time of funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2012 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston with Pastor Chris Dodson officiating. Interment to follow at Chalmers Community Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Monticello Christian Church or the charity of your choice.
