Jack Orrin Stewart, 88, of Brookston died Saturday, August 6, 2011 at his residence. He was born February 10, 1923 in Lafayette to the late Bert Lloyd and Alice Clotene (Martin) Stewart. He graduated from Jefferson High School. His marriage was to Hildegard Lampe on May 9, 1952 in Kassel, Germany. She preceded him in death on August 29, 2003. Jack retired Master Sergeant, United States Air Force, after 20 years. The B-24, the 392 BG-578 BS crew was on, was shot down and crashed over Zwartsluis, Netherlands where Jack and several crew members were taken as POW's. He retired from Purdue University in 1982. He worked in the Biological Science department as a microscope repairman for 20 years. Jack was a member of VFW#1156, the American Legion, and the Ammo Club at Grissom Air Force Base. He enjoyed his pets, flying, collecting stamps and reading. Surviving are two sons, Frank Stewart (wife: Pat) of Moreno Valley, California, Michael Stewart of Brookston, and a daughter, Karen Stewart Gaither (husband: Mike) of Toledo, Ohio. Jack had five grandchildren, Ryan Stewart, Erika Stewart Cook, Matthew, Scott and Noelle Gaither. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, August 11, 2011 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston. Services will be there at 11 a.m. Friday, August 12 with Rev. Dr. Lelan D. McReynolds officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the ASPCA.
