Robert S. "Bob" Nordyke
April 9, 1927 - March 2, 2011
Robert S. Nordyke was born in Danville, Illinois on April 9, 1927, to the late Bliss and Velma (Wynkoop) Nordyke. Bob graduated from Purdue University School of Pharmacy in 1949 after stateside service in the U.S. Navy as a Pharmacist Mate. While at Purdue, Bob played both basketball and football. Bob married Gloria Brahst in 1950. They moved to Wolcott, Indiana to help Bob's father, Bliss, operate Nordyke Drug Store, a pharmacy that Bob's grandfather opened in 1912. Bob was active in his community belonging to the Wolcott Progressive Club, the Wolcott Masonic Lodge, the American Legion, and precinct committeeman for the White County Republican Party. Bob was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Wolcott since 1969, and retired as Chairman of the Board in 2008. Bob operated Nordyke Drug Store for 56 years and retired in 2006, sadly ending 3 generations and nearly one hundred years of Nordyke pharmacists in Wolcott. Bob filled and delivered prescriptions for Wolcott all hours of the day and night throughout his career. He will always be remembered for his dedication, humor, and love of the outdoors. Bob is survived by his wife, Gloria; a daughter, Cynthia Basham (husband: Fred) of Monticello; two sons, Robert J. Nordyke (wife: Ninez Ponce) of California and John S. Nordyke (wife: Coleen Wagner) of Connecticut; six grandchildren: Steve Gauger, Jr. (wife: Elena Cool), Jennifer Gauger (husband: David Pluimer, Jr.), Alexandra Nordyke, Malaya Nordyke, Natalie Nordyke, and Chloe Nordyke; and a sister, Doris Ann Cowgill, of Pennsylvania.
