Elizabeth I. Gardner, 92, of West Lafayette, formerly of Brookston, died on Friday, April 10, 2009 at 9:08 a.m. at the Indiana Veterans Home after a brief illness. She was born on September 20, 1916 in Brookston to the late Jesse and Gladys (Stombaugh) England. She graduated with honors from Brookston High School in 1932 and a graduate of Lafayette Business Academy. Her marriage was to Richard F. Gardner on May 15, 1955 in Lafayette. He preceeded her in death on July 1, 1983. She was raised in Brookston and also lived in Alaska, Alabama, and Florida. Mrs. Gardner worked at Payless Supermarket as a courtesy clerk and retired after 30 years. She was a past member of the Brookston United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Royal Neighbors of America and various legions in Indiana. She enjoyed traveling with her family, reading, animals, playing bingo, flowers, and spending time with her family and friends. Surviving are her daughters, Melinda "Mindy" Anderson and Melissa Gaseor both of Lafayette. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Friends and family may call from 4:30 p.m. until time of funeral service at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, April 13, 2009 in Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston. Pastor Guy Studebaker to officiate. Preceding her in death with her parents and husband is a daughter, Alvarena "Rena" Mikels; a sister, Kathlene Littman; and 2 brothers, John and Jess England.
