John Crothers Vanatta III, M.D. died on May 29, 2008, at age 89. Carol Lee Geisler Vanatta died on February 8, 2009, at age 92. John was born on April 22, 1919 and grew up in Brookston, Indiana. He graduated from Indiana University and Indiana University Medical School and was board certified in Internal Medicine. Carol was born on December 8, 1916 in Louisville, Kentucky and was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. She graduated from Indiana University. She was a soprano in the Indianapolis Opera. John and Carol were wed on July 30, 1944. John served as a physician in the Pacific Fleet in World War II. They moved to Dallas in 1947, where John began a career at Southwestern Medical School that spanned 6 decades. He attained the rank of Professor of Physiology and was named Ashbel Smith Professor in 2007. He received many teaching accolades including the Southwestern Alumni Teaching Award in 1986. The two were members of First United Lutheran Church. They enjoyed many family camping trips and travels abroad. John and Carol loved spending time with their family, daughter, Lynn and son, Paul and grandchildren, Mary and Peter. They will be dearly missed. Their lives will be celebrated at a double funeral service on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the Brookston Federated Church. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Dr. Lelan D. McReynolds will officiate. Interment to follow in Brookston IOOF Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be given to the Brookston Federated Church (envelopes may be mailed to the Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home PO Box 509 Brookston, IN 47923).
