February 4, 1926 - April 9, 2008
Jane A. Shurig, 82, of West Lafayette died peacefully at her University Place home on Wednesday April 9, 2008 at 11:45 am. She was born February 4, 1926 in Hazelton, Pennsylvania to the late John and Bess (Boyle) Moye. She was a graduate of St. Gabriel's High School and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing as a member of the US Cadet Nursing Corp. She was a nurse on the staff of the Polyclinic Hospital, Harrisburg, PA, from 1947-1951. On August 18, 1951 she married Donald "Mike" Shurig in Harrisburg, PA, where Mike worked as a geological engineer on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. In January 1955, the family moved to West Lafayette, Indiana where she helped Mike get his masters degree at Purdue's School of Civil Engineering. She was one of the founders of Blessed Sacrement Church, a member of the Purdue Womens Club for some 50 years, president of the Red Devils Mothers Club, and did countless volunteer jobs for the church, school, community and Purdue students. Jane was a true beautiful Irish Colleen. She loved life and people and people loved her. She literally had hundreds of good friends. She knew the life story of each friend and the names of all their children and grandchildren. She had a great gift of gab and was an equally great listener. She was loving, caring, compassionate, thoughtful and generous. She was a wonderful wife and mother. Probably the greatest thing she ever did was to raise four children and instill each of them with her wonderful beautiful Irish personality. She is survived by husband Mike, son Michael (wife: Sue) of Columbus Ohio, daughter Mary Ann Shurig of Indianapolis, son Tom (wife: Kimberly) of Indianapolis, and grandchildren Andrew and Carolin Shurig. Preceeding her in death was son James Richard Shurig and grandson Michael Murphy Shurig. Friends may call from 4 to 7:30 pm Thursday, April 17, 2008 in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, West Lafayette. Memorial Funeral Mass there 10 am Friday, April 18, 2008. Fr. David Douglas will officiate. Donations may be made in her name to the Michael Murphy Shuig Special Olympic Scholarship Fund (5791 Andover St Columbus, OH 43085).
